Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT)
ESWT is an effective therapy method for chronic tendon and ligament disorders of the musculoskeletal system that are not responding to
first hand conservative care.
Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) is a modern and highly effective treatment method using high-energy sound waves to heal injured tissue. With this innovative therapy approach, pathological alterations of tendons, ligaments, capsules, muscles and bones can be eliminated systematically.
The beneficial effects of shock wave therapy are often experienced after only 1 or 2 treatments. This therapy eliminates pain and restores full mobility, thus improving your quality of life.
In our clinic, we utilize the latest technology available in the field of radial shockwave therapy. Our machine is very effective in providing maximum sound wave output with minimal discomfort. This could not be stated for older technology.
What are shock waves?
Shock waves are audible high-energy sound waves. In modern pain therapy, shock wave energy is conducted from
the place of its generation - the shock wave generator - to the painful body regions, where it unfolds its healing
What are the effects of shock waves?
Shock waves accelerate the healing process by neovascularization of a hyaline degenerative tissue
whether it is an Achilles tendon or plantar fasciitis. Highly concentrated sounds stimulate metabolic
activity and improve blood circulation causing regeneration and healing of the injured tissue.
Shockwave treatments are usually prescribed for chronic injuries. The procedure consists of using strong sound waves to
increase cellular response of the injured tissue by reverting chronic injury to the acute phase. In response to the acute injury,
the body initiates the healing cascade resulting in the overall tissue regeneration and healing. In most cases, there is no
discomfort during the treatment. If the area needs to be anesthetized the patient will be informed before hand. The response to
the treatment varies from one individual to another but most patients don't require more than three treatments.
Research demonstrates that ESWR therapy can be used to effectively treat many chronic conditions including:
- Plantar fasciitis/heel spur
- Achilles tendonitis
- Chronic ligament and tendons sprains/strains
- Toe joints-lack of movement in the joint
- Bones - non healing stress fractures
- Adhesive capsulitis
- Muscle trigger points
ESWT has been subjected to numerous scientific studies and results have been published in numerous, well respected medical journals. Here are a few examples:
- 91% improvement for Calcific Tendonitis - Journal of American Medical Association, 2003
- 90% success rate plantar fasciitis - The Journal of Orthopaedic Research, 2005
- 76% success rate for Achilles Tendinopathy - The American Journal of Sports Medicine

Before starting any procedure, you should be properly assessed to determine whether or not ESWT is the best course of treatment to deal with your specific problem.
